Dressing Up for Diwali

Posted on August 19, 2007 in Latest News

Diwali is a festival, which requires you to dress up in beautiful traditional clothes. Diwali shopping is great fun for the entire family. The festivities during Diwali are marked by vibrant colors. This is reflected in the themes of light and illumination as well. So, wear clothes that reflect the joy and excitement of this 5-day celebration. Diwali comes just once in a year, so leave no stone unturned in dressing up beautiful ethnic wear.

Here are a few points which help you dress up beautifully for the occasion.

  • See to it that all of the clothing you wear on Diwali is new, which is also part of the tradition. This is a way of showing how thankful you are to Lakshmi Mata, the goddess of light and prosperity, for providing you with good fortune.
  • Spend the first day of the Diwali celebration, known as Dhan teras, to shop for all of your clothing. Spending all of Dhan teras shopping for supplies, such as fireworks, diyas (clay pots filled with oil that are lit like lamps), sweets and clothing is part of the Diwali tradition.
  • Diwali is a time to “dress for excess,” and so you should choose apparel that reflects the themes of light and illumination. Children should be dressed in colorful robes and dresses as well. So, just indulge yourselves in beautiful clothing. However, make sure you change your clothes and wear on something simple while bursting crackers.

  • Add plenty of jewelry to your Diwali outfit. While gold and silver are preferable, you may include any costume jewelry that is brightly colored and contributes to the joy of the Festival of Lights. Wear jewelry that compliments the dress you are wearing.
  • Decorate your hands, if you are a female, with mehendi or temporary henna tattoos. Traditions state that such body art is to be treated as a blessing that will light up the soul, which is consistent with the celebration of Diwali. Applying Mehendi designs to your hands will add on greatly to the traditional look.
  • Finally on the evening of Diwali perform a ritual bath before you put on any new clothing. The bath will freshen you up and set you in the mood for celebration. This should be followed by the anointing of oils and perfumes, and a puja, which is a specific prayer and meditation period observed by Hindus.

There will be lots of eye catching ethnic wear in the market, which are specifically designed for the occasion. So, get out and shop till you drop. Wishing each one of you an exciting and a Happy Diwali Shopping Experience.
