Diwali, the most celebrated Indian festival that brings a series of festivals with it. Diwali, Deepawali, Divali or Dipavali is also known as the ‘festival of lights’. Every section of people, regardless of their age economic status, celebrate the festival with equal zeal and enthusiasm. This is the one and only festival to be celebrated by all communities throughout India.

When is Diwali in 2008?
In 2008, Diwali falls on 28th August, Tuesday.

When Diwali is Celebrated?
The four-day festival’s celebration starts on Aswayuja Bahula Chathurdasi and concludes on Karthika Shudda Vidiya.

The first and opening day of the festival Naraka Chathurdasi represents the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krsihna and his wife Satyabhama.

The second day of the festival is Amavasya. On this day, devotees pray and praise Goddess Lakshmi. It is generally called as ‘Lakshmi Puja’. Devotees believe that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi would be in benevolent mood and fulfill their wishes.

The third day of the festival is Karthika Shudda Padyami. On this day, as the boon given by Lord Sri Maha Vishnu, Bali, a great emperor of demons, would come out of Patala Loka and rule Bhooloka. Therefore, it is also known as ‘Bali Padyami’.

The celebration of four-day festival ends with ‘Yama Dvitiya’. This is the day for the sisters and brothers, sisters invite their brothers to their homes.
